Birds have always fascinated me. Whether it is a Black-capped Chickadee busily scurrying through the bushes in search of seeds or an American Dipper working along the edge of a stream looking over the aquatic buffet, I always have to stop and watch. It is amazing to me to see the hand of the Creator at work, not only in the design and function of each specie, but also in the way He cares for them. Unless they are protecting their young or physically injured most wild birds never seem flustered, they are busy though doing what the Creator designed them to do.
So, when I spend a few moments watching the peculiar dipping motion of the American Dipper every time it moves forward or wonder at the ability of a sparrow to extract a seed from its hull in a fraction of a second, my mind always finds its way to Matthew chapter 6.

Here, Jesus clearly gives us His perspective on life and, in particular, what our lives should be focussed on. Towards the end of the chapter He is speaking to us about anxiety or worry and He draws our attention to this fascinating piece of His creation.
Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?” (NASB)

My hope is that you will actually pause and read Matthew chapter 6 because there are words here that we all need to review more often. Also, I hope that maybe someone will actually stop and do what Jesus said and look at or watch a bird. It only takes a few moments and, whether you see birds at a bird feeder, on a city sidewalk, or in the wildest place on earth, you can observe the heavenly Father caring for and feeding them. In those moments ponder the question, “Are you not worth much more than they?” At least, you will have a few moments respite from your harried, stressed-out life. At best, you will let God’s Word find a soft spot in your heart and find a closer walk with Him.
